SATURDAY: Come support teenagers speaking out for positive body image!

YOU are invited to witness and participate in the latest About-Face Action developed by the teenagers in our Take Action group!

It’s called

Born This Great.

The seven girls in our group are taking to the street to speak out for positive body image and self-esteem in a creative way. They need you to show your support by coming by and participating!

(Actual time required: 5 minutes)

The action, “Born This Great,” (a play on the name of Lady Gaga’s latest album) asks passers-by to take a critical look at advertisements by asking them three specific questions of the ad.

The girls will also be wearing T-shirts stating a positive, innate aspect of themselves in bold lettering. Participants on the street will also get to walk away with a positive, personal message in T-shirt form.

C’mon, play along. It’ll be fun!

Teenage Girls Take To The Streets To Speak Out For Positive Body Image and Self-Esteem
San Francisco, CA, August 20, 2011—About-Face, a San Francisco non-profit organization that’s been challenging the status quo since 1995, is about to raise a ruckus again, by helping teenage girls in its Take Action group take a stand against unrealistic images portrayed in advertising.

“This action is great because the girls, who are all between 13 and 18 years old, create, develop, and execute it themselves, with just a little help. We have seen their self-esteem improve so much, and their idea is so creative,” says Jennifer Berger, About-Face’s Executive Director.

Seven girls from San Francisco and the East Bay came together in the last 5 weeks to create this unique action.

“I think we’re going to have a lot of fun and make a lot of change,” said Amy, a Take Action Group member.

Following About-Face’s success with previous actions, including The Covert Dressing Room Action, in which a stealthy duo put up static-cling stickers with positive messages in dressing room mirrors, and the Not “Perfect” But Beautiful! Action where a brave group of girls stood next to cardboard cut-outs of themselves at Powell BART to receive positive messages about their inner or outer beauty from shoppers walking by. About-Face expects a great turnout and smiles all around–not to mention a few changed minds.

The public is invited and encouraged to come support the young women. The girls will be available for interviews during the action.
