More than one kind of sexy
Questions to Consider:
- What features and characteristics are typically considered sexy? Why?
- Have you ever seen people like this represented in other forms of media? Why or why not?
What We Think:
There are usually a few common categories people check off when they are thinking of diversity:
Lingerie brand Curvy Kate is raising the bar with their #TheNewSexy campaign. This is most diverse campaign we’ve ever seen. Eight women model for the Scantilly collection and include a woman with alopecia (an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss), a trans woman, a woman whose leg was amputated, and a woman who has recovered from anorexia.
FYI, none of these women are professional models. Since its launch, the company has never employed a professional model and uses social media to recruit women for their campaigns. Curvy Kate is challenging the world to reimagine what sexy really is. For a long time it has been narrowly defined by long, tanned (but still white) legs, blown-out blonde hair, large breasts, and a slim waist. Not anymore.
