Questions to Consider:
- Why does Wacoal pose beauty as the ultimate solution to a woman’s problems?
- How do media makers convince consumers that buying products will change their lives for the better?
- Are there problems that can’t be solved by a sexy bra and a blowout?
What We Think:
If only I had known that the solution to my every problem was a lacy bra and a good hair day! Does this mean Wacoal is down to pay my college tuition? Do the researchers working on the cure for cancer know about this? Obviously, all those scientists would have figured it out by now if they’d just had the right bra…
Really, as ridiculous as this ad is, the company is being more transparent about their selling tactic than other advertisers are. Wacoal is being very clear: Buy their product and our lives will be better. And honestly, that’s what many advertisers try to get us to think—that by spending our money on their products, our lives will become better in whatever way they’re claiming.
Let’s not ignore the blatant sexism at work here, either. This ad is targeted at women, because obviously the only problems a woman could possibly face can be easily remedied by making sure her hair is smooth and her breasts are perky. Thanks, Wacoal, for finally figuring out what we women really need.
