archive: Sexy Hair’s New Ad Is Out Of Style
Questions to Consider:
- What does Sexy Hair want you to feel about their product?
- Would you purchase this hairspray? Why or why not?
- How does Marilyn Monroe’s full quote compare to Sexy Hair’s abbreviated version?
What We Think:
Over fifty years after her death, Marilyn Monroe still remains a pop culture icon. In their new advertisements, Sexy Hair capitalizes upon the late actress and model’s immortal charm in the hopes of selling more cans of hairspray. Some of the images used are more risque than others, but the quote in this particular ad is what we found the most shocking. It is true that Marilyn said, “In Hollywood a girl’s virtue is much less important than her hairdo.” But it’s also true that Sexy Hair has abbreviated and twisted the quote to fit their own means. The excerpt, which was taken from a critique of the film industry, makes it appear as though Marilyn believes looks are what truly matters.
Here is what Marilyn Monroe actually said:
“In Hollywood a girl’s virtue is much less important than her hairdo. You’re judged by how you look, not by what you are. Hollywood’s a place where they’ll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss, and fifty cents for your soul. I know, because I turned down the first offer often enough and held out for the fifty cents.”
The idea that personal worth is directly related to physical appearances is already damaging, and linking this notion to an influential figure like Marilyn only makes matters worse. For Sexy Hair’s sake, I hope their hair products hold up better than this ad. Because styles do change, and Sexy Hair’s unhealthy obsession with female sexuality couldn’t be less fashionable. — Kendra De Nike
