archive: Moen’s Ad Is Clogged With Gender Bias
Questions to Consider:
- What is Moen saying to consumers?
- How does this ad portray women?
- How does this ad make you feel?
What We Think:
Moen’s new advertisement is certainly making a statement, although we can’t say that it’s a good one. At first glance, it’s difficult to even determine what the company is trying to sell. Necklaces? Dresses? Those would be good guesses, but Moen’s actually hoping you’ll buy one of their new sinks. By jamming their real product into a small corner of the ad, Moen places the focus on their faceless model instead. This unfortunately makes it look as though their headline, “A Statement Piece For Your Bathroom”, is referring to the woman and not the sink. Because the model is wearing jewelery that resembles a faucet, the ad also appears to be suggesting that women should be viewed as objects to be admired and used. Talk about gross. Let’s face it: this ad ought to be flushed down the drain! — Kendra De Nike
