Questions to Consider:
- How does this commercial make you feel?
- Who is the target audience for this ad?
- What are Veet’s makers suggesting with this ad?
What We Think:
When Veet released this particular ad campaign, it was met with protest and outrage, especially considering that it was suggesting that if women don’t shave, they risk becoming a “dude” and that’s the worst thing that could happen to a woman. After all, dudes are gross, hairy, and they are disgusted by women who are hairy! The ads were pulled after many people protested online, but the reality is that someone had to approve these advertisements, believing the campaign was a good idea and that it was funny. By reinforcing the notion that having body hair makes a woman less feminine or attractive, Veet is continuing this idea that women need to follow the rules society sets for their bodies. Hair removal is a personal choice! But we don’t think it should determine a woman’s value or desirability. — Brenda Molina
