Why I have decided that high heels are evil

Check out this great article by Lisa Hix on the Collectors Weekly web site, Our Bodies, Our Stilettos. Did you know that “initially, high-heeled shoes helped keep women, who were seen as irrational and frivolous, powerless”? Thank you for this wonderful historical context. Personally, I can’t deal with high heels, let alone stilettos, because

1. I like to walk fast — as fast as men, and if they’re really slow bastards, faster.

2. Sometimes I need to run for a bus, and I’d really rather not be hobbled, stupid-looking, and injured doing that.

3. I’m totally hot without them.

4. I dislike “Sex and the City” and do not want to pay it homage.

5. I find that high heels are modern-day torture devices for women.

I’m not gonna tell anyone else what to wear or do, but short girls, I really don’t believe you when you say you have to wear them because you’re short.

So there.

  1. I don’t HAVE to wear high heels because I’m short. I WANT to wear them because I’m short. This has nothing to do with inferiority to men or a desire to sexualize myself – I just don’t enjoy being mistaken as a middle schooler. Yes, I know it shouldn’t matter, but if you can find a well fitting comfy and cute pair of heels, why not wear them? Not all heels are torture devices. They’re nice to wear to work because they feel a lot more professional than flats (which tend to make me look like even more of a middle schooler), or other sandals (which, while cute, are totally innapropriate for work).

  2. I have to agree, I am short but I hate wearing high heels. For one thing I am a little overweight and if I walk for quite a way in heels I find my feet really ache. Give me a comfy pair of trainers any day…who cares if I am short – good things come in small packages as my mum always said!

  4. hmm…but once upon a time, men wore heels. Uh…men who thought they were ‘devine’ and above working for a living.

I stopped wearing high heels years ago. High heels make my feet roll up like the wicked witch in OZ. I wore them when I was younger, not to look taller, cause I’m 5’10”, but because it was ‘fashionable.’ I’m not overly concerned about fashion these days. If my feet hurt, my whole day is ruined.

  5. I wear all kinds of shoes, tennishoes, flats, and heels. I like wearing heels, they don’t hurt me or impair my mobility personally, and I like the way they look.

Honestly, I don’t like when people complain about heels being a torture device or degrading type of fashion…no one is making you wear them. People who wear heels wear them because they like them. If you don’t like them, don’t wear them. No big deal, really.
