reCREATE Women in Media program

During the week of July 15, 2013, TILT, About-Face, and Oasis For Girls offered a unique 3-day media workshop designed specifically for teen girls (ages 14-19). Suzannah Tipermas Neufeld, MFT, equipped the seven participants with the essential tools to understand representations of gender in media, develop a language to analyze these media messages, and motivate to make social change in themselves and their communities. TILT instructor Kapi’olani Lee taught storytelling and media production techniques enabling these smart, talented young women to produce and promote their own videos that talk balk to harmful media messages that affect identity, self-esteem, and body image.

Through a series of discussions and a hands-on activity in deconstructing and recreating media messages, the young women brainstormed ideas for two public service announcements (PSA).  They discussed issues such as the media’s role in the following:  pressure to be perfect, eating disorders, body image, emphasis on using sex to sell, and the objectification of women. The participants felt that is was important that their PSAs should not only present a problem, but also provide a positive message inspiring the following phrases and ideas — knowledge is power, tools, truth, be comfortable in your own skin, this is who I am and what I am capable of.

On Friday, August 2, we celebrated the thoughtful and creative work of the seven amazing young women who helped define our inaugural reCREATE Women in Media program. The two PSAs were screened at the Oasis for Girls Summer Program Graduation ceremony.
