A picture worth a thousand words for trans representation

Laverne Cox and Janet Mock

Laverne Cox and Janet Mock

This image of Laverne Cox and Janet Mock — both trans women of color — brought a smile to my face today.

Cox is an actress and transgender advocate, perhaps best known for her portrayal of Sophia on the Netflix hit series Orange is the New Black. Mock is an advocate, author and the founder of the #GirlsLikeUs movement, which “encourages trans women to live visibly”.

The women are posing in front of Cox’ Time Magazine cover, which accompanied a piece on transgender activism and awareness.

It’s a positive reminder of just how far trans visibility and advocacy have come in the last few years, even though there’s still far to go.
