Questions to Consider:
- What is this campaign telling women who feel judged when they work out?
- How are the women in this video different from those in other athletic campaigns you may have seen?
- What other challenges do women face when it comes to bodies and exercise?
What We Think:
Who says girls can’t sweat? Not This Girl Can, a campaign run out of the UK that aims to encourage women to get out there and get active in any way they choose–regardless of the stigmas they face. Unlike most fitspo and exercise ads, this video features women of ALL shapes and sizes rocking what they’re doing. The group of women in this video is just as diverse as the range of sports they’re playing, inspiring everyone to “wiggle, jiggle, move and prove that judgment is a barrier that can be overcome.” It’s also pretty awesome that they look like real people actually working out instead of the hyper-sexualized, super-thin models we’re used to seeing in athletic campaigns. We’re not all buff Barbie dolls, after all.
With that in mind, getting active is still a challenge some women face for many reasons. However, if body campaigns like This Girl Can continue to be inclusive in their advertising, we may see more and more women breaking free of judgment and exercising because they love their bodies–not because they hate them. – Kendra De Nike & Caitlin Wire
