Archive of Winners 15: The Hunger Games really satisfies
Questions to Consider:
- What are the main character (Katniss)'s traits?
- What does this film and book say about girls?
- What would this movie be like if it were a "typical" action/adventure movie?
What We Think:
There are so many reasons we love the Hunger Games book AND movie: There’s a strong, awesome heroine, Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence), who also shows her vulnerability, love, and fear. And she doesn’t have the smoothest social skills, preferring to be alone and taciturn. a) Who does have perfect social skills? and b) She has great archery skills instead. But do we see sexualized close-ups of Katniss’ cleavage or butt, or hints that she’s about to jump Peeta to heighten the sexual tension? No. And there’s the subject of the main male character, Peeta, who Katniss saves, and who doesn’t fit a typical mold of masculinity. Case in point: his mad cake-decorating skills. Basically, we can’t wait for the second movie to come out. –Jennifer Berger

I absolutely LOVED "Hunger Games" and how it portrays Katniss as a strong and independent young women who not only tries to save herself but also provides for her family. What I liked THE MOST about the book is that there's hardly a thought on Katniss's mind about boys, appearance and all the superficial things that girls are meant to be solely into.
