Google’s Nexus 7 encourages curiosity in girls
Questions to Consider:
- How does this commercial represent healthy child development?
- How is this vision of women differ from what we often see in commercials?
- What elements did the advertisers use to de-stereotype the girl?
What We Think:
Google’s Nexus 7 “Curious” commercial receives our applause for so, so many reasons. Why? This commercial repeatedly proclaims the importance of a healthy body and mind for women and girls of all ages. The ad starts off with a little girl and her mother sitting together on the couch reading. First things first, the mother and child are refreshingly real: the mom — down-to-earth and loving — and the little girl — unadorned, active, and absorbed in learning. Inspired by the story of Curious George and the Rocket, the little girl creates a house out of vegetables, a fortress, space gear, and a spaceship out of the things around her. And then, on top of her wonderful creativity, she has two real women — her mother and her grandmother — supporting her imaginative play and curiosity.
Essentially, this commercial sends out the message that education and imagination is absolutely key to the development of an all-around healthy kids, and healthy girls. – Chelsea Johnson
