What We Think:
Earlier this year, Dove launched its newest campaign, Choose Beautiful. Dove went to major cities across the world and had doors labeled “Beautiful” and “Average” which aided in their study on how women perceive themselves. Cameras watched as some women struggled to decided between which door to walk through while others did not hesitate.
The study concludes, “ninety-six percent of women surveyed said they don’t see themselves as beautiful, but 80 percent believed every woman has something beautiful about her. While many women can see the beauty in other women, it’s sometimes harder to see it in ourselves.”
When Dove spoke to the women who chose average, they often said that they regretted the decision immediately and that it made them feel bad that that was the decision about themselves. Some of them even said that they felt like they were supposed to choose “average” because “beautiful” seems unattainable.
Through this campaign, women open up about what beauty is to them. It was designed to empower women, to make the decision of being beautiful for themselves rather than having society telling them what beauty is. At the end of the day, you don’t need a door to tell you you’re beautiful—you tell yourself that you are beautiful because you are. – Rebecca Pirayou
