Chris Rock is a comedian and finds humor within his culture.. A sensitive subject for some African American woman. Realy its just a matter of personal preference despite all the rhetoric behind the comparison.

I Work with African American stylists and thier clients. I have seen and felt the emotional impact that comes from those who have personally chosen to intergate hair systems into thier lives. The key is choice and preference despite the comparison between black womens hair and white womans. In contrast white woman opt for curly hair.

I am an African American young adult and each and every day I'm getting brainwashed with this expectancy of getting my hair straightened. People always ask me 'When are u going to get ur hair straightened" or 'When was the last time you have. But when I do wear my hair my hair natural (always) ppl always compliment my hair. I appreciate you for creating this article because this IS an issue that most ppl are invisible to.

I am a woman who can easily relate to this subject. My mother is Filipina and my father is African-American. I was born with unmanagable tight curls. As a child, I wore my natural all the time. I grew up in a predominately Asian community, so I sort of felt like an outcast because of my physical features. Once middle school hit, I decided to relax my hair. I loved it, because it made me feel "prettier" and I guess you can say "more accepted" because I looked like everybody else. I grew up, and into high school, I realized how much I regretted it. I was fooling myself by letting the stereotype of "straight hair is beautiful" control my life. I realized how beautiful my crazy curls are, and how I should embrace it. I know how hard it is to go through things like this, and I see it EVERYDAY in the African-American community. Actually, not only in the African-American community, but it seems that everybody has problems with how they look. Asians with beautiful black and straight hair want blonde and curly hair. Latinas with gorgeous waves or curls want straight hair. One of my missions is to uplift women and help them realize how beautiful they are. I am so glad that their is an organization such as About Face who does this. I appreciate all that you have done and I support you all 100%. Thank you.
